Image sizes: 256x256, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, 20x20, 16x16 File formats: BMP, GIF, PNG, ICO ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Why Do You Need to Use PNG Image Format in Your Web Design? The advantages of including PNG images in website creation over various other file types like GIF and JPEG; the file type works well if you need to make good and wonderful icons that will entice your visitorsThe PNG file type was introduced a few years back; it was put forth for consumers in 1995/96 to cover the drawbacks of the popular GIF file type. However, it failed to create ripples because the then browsers were not designed to support the progressive features of PNG so website designers and makers were forced to use it restrictedly. One of the main hurdles that marred the features of PNG was with Microsoft's Internet Explorer which was the most well known and widely used browsers of that period; IE had little or no place for PNG support which meant that the format could only be used in the most restricted way. However, the scene went through a change after the availability of IE7; this new browser from Microsoft has aided in increasing the usability of PNGs. So here is why at three reasons why PNG is one of the most innovative image formats to be introduced so far: It is possible to create see through images or alpha transparency: When you pitch GIF against PNG, it will become apparent that one of the major differences is that you will only be able to save any odd color as transparent in GIF which means that the color can be used regardless of it being opaque or transparent with no other color in between with the use of PNG, you get a specific feature over GIF; because the format supports semi transparent pixels. This simply means that you can save a PNG image with a soft drop shadow and then float it against any background. The Image can also be used as a gradient background or water mark. The file type lets you incorporate the slow fading of shades from fully opaque to see through, exposing the webpage below They look spectacular: Not only do you get surprising flexibility when using PNG images but also; there are several other advantages to including this format. For example, if you choose a JPG image, you lose some of the information from the initial image every time the file is saved, so eventually, you will notice a distinct deterioration in the appearance of the media. Although, this issue has been solved in GIF and it is possible to store the pictures without losing any information, GIF has a highly restrictive 256 color palette, which imparts it quite useless if you are going to store a snap shot. On the other hand, with PNG, you can get the perfect benefits of the image formats; you get a full color display like with JPEG format and it also provides managed color palette as seen in GIF files. Also the compression of the picture is without loss so the picture stays as it is even if you save the file several times. Self Optimization is possible in PNG: A serious problem that web programmers need to handle very often is the issue where the brightness and the contrast ratio of the screen has to be regulated to see the images correctly; this problem occurs due to the Gamma settings of different monitors. Gamma is a method used to spread the brightness across the display surface. However, diverse operating systems use distinct Gamma settings. Therefore, multimedia that is color corrected to suit Windows may not look right on a Mac. Once again, in this scenario the versatile PNG image type can help you out, in PNG, you can store the pictures with an inherent Gamma correction feature so whatever operating system you are working on; the Gamma settings will be changed on its own to display an image with the impressive contrast and brightness. ![]()
