Why Should You Use PNG Images in Your Web Design?
The benefits of using PNG file format in website designing over other formats ;for instance, GIF and JPEG; the image format can be used to make good and spectacular images that will prove alluring to your visitorsThe PNG image format was introduced quite a while back; it was brought out for consumers around 95/96 to meet the deficiencies of the popular GIF image format. However, it did not catch on because the early browsers were not designed to support the state of the art features of PNG so website designers and developers were compelled to incorporate it sparingly. One of the primary blocks standing in the way was Microsoft Internet Explorer which was the most well known and widely used browsers of the time; IE had very little provision for PNG support which meant that the format could only be incorporated in limited capacity. For example, if you choose a JPG image, you lose a part of the details on the original file every time the file is saved, so after a while, you will be able to see a distinct decline in the quality of the images. Even though, this concern has been resolved in the image format and you will be able to store the files without losing any data, GIF only allows for a limited 256 color palette, which renders it quite useless if you want to save a snap shot. On the other hand, with PNG, you will get the best features of the two file types; you get an extensive color display like with JPEG format and it also offers managed color palette a la GIF files. Also the compression of the file is without loss so the picture does not change even if you save the file several times.
Self Optimization is possible in PNG: A serious problem that web designers need to handle frequently is the fact that the brightness and the contrast ratio of the screen has to be adjusted to see the pictures appropriately; the issue comes into the picture due to the Gamma settings of different monitors. Gamma is a technology used to spread the brightness across the display surface. However, various operating systems use varying Gamma settings. Hence, an image that is color corrected for Windows may not look right on a Mac. Here again, in this scenario the versatile PNG format can prove useful, in PNG, you can store the images with a built in Gamma correction so despite the differences in operating systems; the Gamma settings will be changed on its own to display a picture with the impressive ratios of contrast as well as brightness.
