The surface at it was dim, brownish-grey, lifeless, as at the Moon, and deprived of any reference points, except the only thing. Approximately in the middle of the big axis the lateral surface was stained by kilometre dark dab as if something once, many centuries ago, has hit and flattened out about it. Blow, apparently, has not caused to the Frame any harm, but this dab caused those easy fluctuations of brightness which were found out by Stenton. The images transmitted by other chambers, have not added to this picture anything new. However the trajectories drawn by rockets through own gravitational field of the Frame, a distance additional and besides the important information - have allowed to define weight of the cylinder. For the monolithic Cylinder of such sizes the weight has appeared extremely small. It already has surprised nobody: the artificial body also should be hollow. Event for which for a long time hoped of which for a long time were afraid, at last has come true. To mankind, probably, it was necessary to receive the first visitors from stars. Chapter 4 APPOINTMENT Captain Norton clearly remembered these first telecasts as today before landing many times scrolled them anew, the impression, what electronic image not in a condition however was in reality made was to transmit: the sizes of the Frame simply stunned. Such impression never arose at landing to a natural heavenly body, to the Moon or to Mars there were worlds, and we obviously understood that they are great. However Norton could sit down and on the eighth companion of Jupiter who was even slightly more Frames and still seemed absolutely, absolutely small. The paradox spoke simply. The consciousness could not reconcile to the fact that this artificial structure, in millions times more massive, than any of the space stations created by the person. The weight of the Frame reached at least ten millions tons; the similar figure inspired to the cosmonaut not simply awe, but also the real fear. It is not surprising that as the bulk of convex eternal metal filled in the sky, the captain all felt own negligibility and despondency more sharply. ![]()
