Your sense of the market, strong pressure of buyers and technical price schedules - all says to you that the market moves upwards. But you wish to protect yourselves on a case of a fast turn. Then you establish the stop order on sale on 1 092. If the market is suddenly reduced to this price, yours 10 contracts will be sold, and you will get profit of 500 points. The important assumption here that your stop order has been really executed under the given price. In the wild market on which buyers or sellers suddenly disappear, the order cannot be executed, if nobody wishes to take other part of the given transaction. Good brokers will do for order performance all from them depending, but they cannot work wonders. The stop order on sale on 1 092 will not be executed, if as you hoped, the market all time will grow with 1 097 to 1 100 or further. You take away your profits and cancel the given stop order on sale.
But let's assume that you have bought 10 contracts on 1 087, believing that the market was on lifting and after that sudden news have called fast decrease in the market, and all have rushed to sell. You leave with the small in advance certain loss — 400 points because have stop on sale at level 1083. Proceeding from your risk level, you were ready to risk 400 points, but thus protected yourself from "free falling".
