Image sizes: 256x256, 128x128, 48x48, 32x32, 24x24, 16x16 File formats: BMP, GIF, PNG, ICO ![]() ![]() ![]() Why Should You Use PNG Images in Your Web Design? The pros of including PNG file format in web designing over other formats like GIF and JPEG; the image format can be used to make better and wonderful icons that will wow your visitorsThe PNG file format was introduced a few years back; it was put forth for consumers in the mid 90's to meet the deficiencies of the traditional GIF file format. However, it did not make an impression because the early browsers could not offer support to the state of the art features of PNG so web designers and makers were compelled to include it in their designs restrictedly. One of the main hindrances that marred the features of PNG was with Microsoft Internet Explorer which was one of the most popular browsers of the time; IE had limited space for PNG support which meant that the format could only be used in the most restricted way. However, things metamorphosed after the availability of IE7; this latest product from Microsoft has proved immensely useful in increasing increasing the usability of PNGs. So here is why at three reasons why PNG is one of the most useful image formats in the market today: You will be able to create transparent images or a feature called alpha transparency: When you compare PNG with GIF, you will see that a very distinct advantage with PNG is that you will only be able to save a specific color transparently through the use of GIF which means that you can get the color regardless of it being opaque or transparent with nothing in betweenbut when you use PNG, you get a serious advantage; because the format supports semi transparent pixels. This feature gives you the ability to save a PNG file with a soft drop shadow and then float it against any background. The Image can also be used as a watermark or a gradient background. The file type lets you incorporate the slow fading of shades from entirely opaque to absolutely transparent, and hence you will be able to view the webpage below They look spectacular: It is a well known fact that PNG images give you extreme flexibility also; there are several other advantages to using this format. For instance, if you make use of the JPG Format, you lose some of the information from the initial image each time the file is saved, so eventually, you will be able to view a distinct decline in the finesse of the media. Even if, this issue has now been sorted in the image format and it is possible to save the images without sacrificing any data, GIF only allows for a limited 256 color palette, which renders it quite useless if you want to store a photograph. But, if PNG is incorporated, you can get the perfect benefits of both these formats; you will have access to an extensive color display like the one used in JPEG file type and it also supports managed color palette like GIF files. At the same time the compression of the picture is without loss so the photograph stays as it is even if you save the file several times. PNG is self optimizing: A serious problem that web designers have to tackle on a daily basis is the anomaly due to which the contrast and brightness of the commuter screen has to be regulated to see the the display correctly; this happens due to the difference in the Gamma setting used for the different monitors. Gamma is a technology that helps to scatter the luminance across the display surface. However, different operating systems use a variety of Gamma settings. So, an image that is color corrected for Windows will seem wrong when seen on Mac. Again, in this scenario the versatile PNG format comes to the rescue, in PNG, you can store the files with an inherent Gamma correction feature so whatever operating system you are working on; the Gamma settings will be automatically adjusted to display a file with the amazing brightness and contrast. ![]()
