Unfortunately, gone are the days where a large, corporate entity won't even look at you if you don't have some kind of degree or certificate indicating some formal coaching as a graphic designer. You want to prove that you have had categorical coaching in the field. Graphical designer formally called Typesetters are now part of the white collar world.
While getting your hands on that bit of paper may not reflect your talent and creativity, in the US and Europe, graphical design schools reflect an amount of ability that reflects a person's capability to do the graphic designing job. As a consequence, there are a number of degrees and certificate programs that have developed around this expanding industry.
