What It Takes To Be A Graphic Designer
You can select from a wide variety of learning programs that qualify you for different things including graphic design, advertising, animation, multimedia, web development and the like.When it comes to graphic design, there are various levels of education needed in order to excel in the industry. Unfortunately, gone are the days where a large, corporate entity will not even look at you if you don't have some type of degree or certificate indicating some formal training as a graphic designer. You need to prove that you have had specific training in the field. Graphic designer formally referred to as Typesetters are now part of the white collar world.
While getting your hands on that piece of paper may not reflect your talent and creativity, in the United States and Europe, graphic design schools reflect a level of skill that reflects a person's ability to do the graphic design job. As a result, there are a number of degrees and certificate programs that have developed around this expanding industry.
You can now select from a wide variety of programs that qualify you for different things including graphic design, advertising, animation, multimedia, web development and the like. While all of these are part of and related to graphic design, they have special tools and techniques that need to be mastered in order to d the job. The principles for all are the same, but the end results are arrived at through different means.
Many people lump all of these special subgroups under the umbrella called "graphic design", but that takes away from the wealth of programs out there. Multimedia specialists may be working in the design field, but they are more focused on working in the television industry. Graphic designers work in print media, advertising and the like. Website designers work primarily on the World Wide Web and can add Flash, animation and combine text and graphics in a web layout to deliver information. There are different criteria, software and techniques that need to be master in order to work in this field.
There are certificate or short term programs out there as well as 4-year Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees that offer an in-depth study of the graphic design field. Studying in a 3- or 4-year program gives an aspiring graphic design graduate a leg up on getting one of those high-end jobs out there. While this isn't a guarantee, it is still an expanding industry and there is opportunity out there for the persistent.
These schools are now offline and geographically located or online for students who want more flexibility. Because graphic design is such a technical, computer-based field, it lends itself to the online arena quite well. All of these programs are designed to allow you to learn and focus on various subgroups of the main field whether it be web design or multimedia.
