The main concern with 3D printing and copyright is that these big companies, exceedingly protective of their copyright, are wary about what 3D printing technology can do which may infringe on their copyright.The problem is that people could and have already made imitations or duplicates of products in the past.They didn’t need 3D printing to do it. In some cases, creators of original ideas may have found it acceptable or even flattering to have products that inspire other users to create their own. However, they would still want to declare copyright on their ideas before it becomes public property. If an idea is public domain or is being used freely by the public, it is generally understood that nobody has claimed copyright for it. These days, 3d printing technology has become so advanced there are products out in the market that can be used to scan a product and create an imitation. The owner can have copies of it for specific personal purpose; other people would be infringing on the copyright if they scan, create a duplicate and then sell it or its design in 3D marketplaces. It should be noted that, unless it’s a fair use or licensed, even a hand-designed (as opposed to scanned) 3D model is said to be infringing on the copyright if it contains features or design from a copyright. Actually, this is not a new problem. It’s the same problem that the record and movie industries are facing. It has been done before and people will continue to do it – create a model of a copyrighted material,share it to the public or sell something that infringes copyrights.
